About San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center

San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center operates an opioid treatment program on the Zuckerberg San Francisco General campus.

The program serves adults and young adults with opioid use disorder including those facing co-occurring serious mental health conditions.

As a publicly operated safety-net program, it offers accessible medication-based care designed to meet people where they are.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

The emphasis here is on medication treatment for opioid use disorder in an outpatient setting.

The program provides methadone, buprenorphine (with and without naloxone), extended-release injectable buprenorphine, and naltrexone along with medically supervised withdrawal after stabilization.

The team offers special expertise in rapid methadone up-titration for people using fentanyl and transitions from high-dose methadone to buprenorphine.

Treatment pairs pharmacotherapy with cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, substance use counseling and 12-step facilitation.

Patients receive comprehensive assessments, individual, group, and family counseling, overdose education and aftercare and discharge planning that addresses both addiction and underlying needs.

Care for Higher-Need Populations

The program offers focused support for pregnant and postpartum women and clients living with HIV/AIDS.

On-site medical resources include psychiatric care, hepatitis C treatment and testing for HIV, STDs, TB, and hepatitis.

Wraparound services such as case management, housing support, employment counseling, peer support and domestic violence services round out a whole-person approach.
