Michael E DeBakey VA Medical Center

Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is the main campus of VA Houston Health Care, offering Veterans comprehensive addiction and substance use treatment in Houston's Texas Medical Center area.

Through its substance disorders treatment program, the facility provides outpatient care for drug and alcohol use disorders using evidence based therapies, medication management and structured recovery groups.

The program is rooted in a recovery oriented philosophy created by Veterans in treatment, emphasizing responsibility, peer support and persistence in healing.

Veteran Focused SUD Treatment

The Substance Disorders Treatment Program is designed specifically for Veterans working to overcome drug and alcohol addiction.

Same day walk in evaluations are available during weekday business hours at the main campus, making it easier for Veterans to take the first step toward recovery.

Treatment may include motivational enhancement therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy for substance use disorders and contingency management, twelve step facilitation and medication management.

Group offerings include commitment to sobriety, relapse prevention using the Matrix Model and transcending self therapy, giving Veterans structured tools for lasting change.

Whole Person Care

In August 2024, VA Houston opened a new 48 bed Domiciliary providing residential rehab for Veterans needing a higher level of support.

Care can also be coordinated with PTSD services, Health Care for Homeless Veterans, vocational rehab and Whole Health programs to address the full picture of recovery.

Getting Started

The medical center is located at 2002 Holcombe Boulevard in Houston, with in person, virtual and residential care options available to eligible Veterans by referral.

Veterans are encouraged to bring information on any additional coverage including Medicare and Medicaid, TRICARE or private insurance, when scheduling care.
