About American Lake VA Medical Center
American Lake VA Medical Center is a Veterans Affairs hospital in Tacoma, Washington that includes addiction and behavioral health care for Veterans as part of VA Puget Sound Health Care.
The Addictions Treatment Center delivers outpatient and inpatient services for substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns.
Care is rooted in a whole-person model, supporting Veterans even if they have not stopped using substances yet.
Veteran-Focused Substance Use Treatment
The center specializes in addiction care for Veterans, addressing needs that range from unhealthy alcohol use to severe, life-threatening addiction.
Services are housed on the American Lake campus and accept self-referrals through VA Puget Sound mental health pathways.
Treatment combines therapies, counseling and FDA-approved medications for opioid, alcohol, and tobacco use disorders, including methadone and buprenorphine.
Veterans also have access to drug and alcohol monitoring, overdose prevention education and naloxone kits, psychiatric care and telehealth appointments.
Mental Health and Whole-Person Support
Addiction care is connected to a broader behavioral health system that supports PTSD, military sexual trauma recovery and services for women, LGBTQ+, minority, and returning Veterans.
The team also coordinates referrals for residential treatment, housing, finances, chronic pain and tobacco cessation, helping Veterans address the full picture of recovery.
The medical center serves Veterans across the Puget Sound region and offers free parking and travel support for eligible Veterans.
