Women in the Tallahassee area will soon have a new option for addiction treatment built specifically for them.
Canopy Pines Recovery Center, a women-only detox and residential substance use program, is aiming to open in mid-July at 13305 Mahan Drive, according to WTXL ABC 27.
The goal, its founder says, is to remove the barriers that often keep women from seeking help.
What Canopy Pines Will Offer
The facility plans to provide medical detox, 24/7 nursing care, weekend and evening therapy sessions, and experiential options such as exercise, equine therapy and art therapy.
Founder and CEO Lantie Jorandby, a psychiatrist, said women often face distinct obstacles to care, including histories of trauma and heavy family responsibilities such as caring for children, spouses, or aging parents.
Jorandby said her own family experiences with substance use shaped the vision for a space designed around women’s needs.
What This Means for Tallahassee Residents
Local data points to real demand. Big Bend 211 reported that most of its callers are women, and that in a single recent month it identified 2,244 needs, with mental health and substance use ranking as the second-highest category.
Big Bend 211 CEO Kay Ignacio noted that even people with insurance in Tallahassee can wait months for an appointment with a therapist, counselor or psychiatrist, which makes new local providers important. Canopy Pines also hopes to partner with Capital Health Plan to widen access.
Understanding Addiction in Women
For years, addiction was treated as mostly a male issue, but that picture is changing. One analysis cited in the report found that 11.5% of boys and men over age 12 have a substance use disorder, compared with 6.4% of women and girls.
The analysis also found that women are more likely to visit the emergency room or to fatally overdose.
Common signs that someone may need addiction treatment include needing more of a substance to feel the same effect, withdrawal symptoms when stopping, neglecting responsibilities, and continuing use despite harm to health or relationships.
