Families in West Michigan trying to figure out where to start with addiction treatment in Michigan are in luck. A three-day event in September puts a lot of the answers in one spot. Sober Fest Michigan runs September 11-13 and includes community resource booths, all-recovery meetings and speakers who’ve gone through treatment themselves.

The festival takes place in Belding, about 30 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. Admission is free. Parking is a suggested $10 donation for the weekend and includes shuttle service.

This Matters for West Michigan Families

Events like this one tend to get covered as feel-good community news. A family that’s been quietly worried about a son, a spouse or a parent now has a place to ask questions in person, without an appointment and not needing to commit to anything.

The vendor booths and community resource tables allow that to happen. Organizers describe the festival as a space where people can experience connection without pressure. It’s often a first step for someone who doesn’t know where to begin.

That first-step problem is real in Michigan. Families frequently know something is wrong long before they know what kind of help to ask for. The gap between those two points broadens as time progresses.

The Signs

Knowing what you are looking at helps you ask better questions at a resource table.

With alcohol, common signs of a developing problem include drinking more or longer than intended, needing more to feel the same effect, trouble cutting back and continuing despite problems in your personal life. Withdrawal symptoms point to physical dependence and medications to reduce relapses.

With opioids, whether prescription painkillers or fentanyl, signs include running out of prescriptions early, drowsiness alternating with agitation, pinpoint pupils, withdrawal that looks like a bad flu and pulling away from family. Fentanyl is a strong and deadly synthetic opioid that shoulders the blame for many opioid deaths.

With stimulants such as methamphetamine, watch for long stretches without sleep, rapid weight loss, dental problems, paranoia and erratic behavior.

None of these confirm addiction, but they should spark a conversation to prevent symptoms from mushrooming.

Entering the Festival

The program runs across three days. Friday is 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday is 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Scheduled programming includes live music from local and regional bands, speakers sharing recovery stories, a remembrance walk honoring lives lost to addiction, vendor booths and community resources, yard games, food trucks, family activities, bonfire all-recovery meetings, beginner yoga and meditation, and Sunday recovery church with praise music.

The keynote speaker is Corey Warren, co-founder of RISE Recovery Community and host of The Sober Boyz Podcast. His own history includes addiction, incarceration and multiple attempts at treatment before finding that lasting recovery took more than stopping substance use.

The all-recovery meetings especially stand out. Unlike meetings limited to one program or substance, all-recovery formats are generally open to anyone affected by addiction, including relatives.

Addiction Treatment in The Great Lakes State & Beyond

Talking to someone at a festival booth is a start. Getting into care is the next step, and Michigan has several routes.

Michigan’s Community Mental Health Services Programs coordinate publicly funded substance use treatment by region. Residents can be assessed through their regional entity regardless of insurance status. Michigan Medicaid covers substance use disorder treatment including outpatient counseling, residential care, and medication for opioid use disorder.
