A Missouri nonprofit’s latest fundraiser puts local housing and addiction treatment centers in the spotlight. Benilde Hall held its second annual black-tie gala on October 22 to raise $100,000 for transitional housing and treatment programs serving veterans and other folks in Kansas City in need.
The Gala
The event featured live music, food and a live auction. Money raised supports Benilde Hall‘s work in substance abuse treatment, mental health services, homelessness and transitional housing.
Executive director Erin Fraser relayed that the need for treatment and transitional housing continues to grow. Transitional housing provides a temporary place to live during rehab, and Benilde Hall connects housing with treatment. The organization especially collaborates with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
A Growing Focus on Older Veterans
Benilde Hall has recently seen a particular need among veterans ages 65 and older. Benilde Hall expanded a few years ago with a new veterans’ wing. The addition included eight single rooms with private bathrooms to serve 40 veterans annually. They now have 109 beds, 70 of which are reserved for US veterans.
Housing is Part of the Conversation
The program brings homelessness, substance use and mental health into one local service model. Benilde Hall’s approach places transitional housing alongside treatment rather than treating them as unrelated needs.
Development director Thom Fox noted that people shouldn’t assume that the homeless are a lost cause. The gala supports renewal and transformation for people who served the country and later struggled. In fact, addiction treatment options can include clinical services, housing and longer-term aftercare.
