A Texas university is addressing addiction with something that medication can’t replace. It offers consistent community that patients in recovery need to maintain sobriety.
Baylor University’s Beauchamp Addiction Recovery Center now runs a weekly program called ReCenter. Students gather every Tuesday evening at Teal Residential College. They listen to peer stories, join guided activities and discuss what college life actually feels like.
What Happens at ReCenter
ReCenter centers on trained staff and open conversation. Students arrive at 6 p.m. They listen to peers and join structured activities that help to build practical skills for recovery.
The program welcomes everyone including students in recovery and students who currently feel stressed. Allies can also attend and anyone who desires to learn more about the community can also participate.
Jose Vallejo currently serves as assistant director of collegiate recovery at the center. He said the program helps students develop healthy boundaries and honest relationships.
“The opposite of addiction is connection and I think the longing of every human is to be known to be seen and to be loved,” Vallejo said. “That is what the ReCenter program is a place for students to be seen and loved by others.”
Why Connection Matters in Addiction Treatment
Recovery programs increasingly view connection as a clinical resource rather than an optional benefit.
A Worldmetrics survey cited in reporting about ReCenter found that only 11 percent of college students affected by substance abuse receive treatment through a recovery community.
Isolation can contribute to relapse, which is why regular contact with people who understand the challenges of sobriety can provide a needed source of support.
Recovery Program Manager Laura Ellis said ReCenter intentionally keeps its doors open to a broad range of concerns. A student struggling with class stress or a conflict with a roommate can still find support through this program.
“There are students that maybe are not dealing with anything but they can be allies in this space for other students that might be recovering from a specific struggle” she said.
Understanding Substance Use in College
College brings several factors that increase the risk of substance use. These include binge drinking norms, academic pressure and easy access to drugs.
A student may show several warning signs when substance use becomes a serious problem. Falling grades can signal trouble. So can withdrawal from friends, changes in sleep secretive behavior and continued substance use.
Early support can influence outcomes. Campus communities such as Baylor’s can make that first conversation easier.
What This Means for Texas Families
Programs such as ReCenter reflect a broader approach to reaching young adults who need addiction support. Treatment does not always begin in a clinic. Trusted environments that students visit daily can also provide an entry point.
Ask what recovery support options exist where the student lives and studies. Connection need to be separate from treatment.
