About Seekers of Serenity

Seekers of Serenity (SOS) in Columbus, Nebraska, provides residential and outpatient addiction treatment for adults recovering from substance use disorders (SUD). Run by Behavioral Health Specialists, a nonprofit with over 27 years of experience, SOS is located in east-central Nebraska, just an hour from Lincoln and 85 miles from Omaha. Columbus offers a peaceful rural setting, while still being close enough to the recovery resources and support available in larger cities.

SOS welcomes everyone, so your background doesn’t matter. And don’t worry about paying for treatment because they accept private pay, Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans. They won’t turn anyone away because of money, and help anyone who qualifies with a sliding scale fee.

Getting Through Detox

Detox comes first for everyone. Whether it’s alcohol or opioids, detox gives your body the chance to clear out the substances. You’ll focus on rest, eating well and feeling more stable.

Once you’re up to it, you can join a treatment group. For most clients, detox is a time to ease into treatment and get a feel for the program’s pace. After detox, most clients start either residential or outpatient treatment. Your care team will help you decide what’s best for your needs and situation.

Structured Residential Addiction Treatment

Residential treatment is very structured. You'll focus a lot on accountability and developing healthier coping skills. Self discovery is a big deal during treatment because it helps you understand your patterns, so you can start to break them and make better choices.

A Flexible Path to Recovery

Outpatient treatment lets you stay connected to work and family during recovery. A great part of the program is aftercare, which helps you stay grounded once treatment ends. That might mean continued therapy, check-ins, or 12-step meetings.

Some clients need support that goes beyond what's available on-site. Being close to Omaha and Lincoln makes it easier to get referrals for housing, medical care, or services not offered in Columbus.
Seekers of Serenity offers a strong foundation for recovery where you can step out of survival mode and start building a better life. Many who complete treatment describe it as a place where they were finally able to face their addiction without judgment.

Levels of care

Detox
People finishing detox need a clear next step, since this stage alone does not treat a substance use disorder. Moving into ongoing treatment right after continues the work that withdrawal management began.
Inpatient / residential
Once the stay starts to wind down, thoughts turn to life beyond inpatient structure. In Nebraska, care ends with a planned step down to outpatient support and follow-up.
Outpatient
People in Nebraska stepping down from residential care often turn to outpatient sessions. The work goes on at a lighter pace while daily life continues at home.
Aftercare support
Once discharge from a Nebraska program nears, aftercare planning begins and next steps are discussed together. Writing the plan down before treatment ends gives it a head start.
Co-occurring disorders
Care for co-occurring disorders is built for one situation, a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. The pairing is often called a dual diagnosis.
