About Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center
Creative Alternatives is an adult psychiatric rehabilitation and community psychiatry program operated through Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.
The program serves adults with serious and persistent mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and personality disorders, through a multidisciplinary team approach.
Creative Alternatives offers a long term, wraparound model of care designed to support people who have not benefited from traditional services and who may cycle through hospitals or emergency rooms.
Community Based Psychiatric Rehabilitation in Baltimore
Creative Alternatives provides individualized psychiatric rehabilitation built around continuity and long-term partnership, with some members remaining in the program for more than 30 years.
Services include psychiatric evaluation and treatment, medication management, case management and individual, group and family therapy.
The program runs a community center Monday through Thursday, where members attend groups, therapy, psychiatric appointments and case management sessions.
Care addresses both clinical needs and daily life, with support that adapts as members progress over time.
Recovery Support and Whole Person Care
While Creative Alternatives is not a licensed substance use disorder facility, substance use support is available through a Peer Recovery Coach and therapists in both group and individual settings.
Members can also access art therapy, music, vocational groups, smoking cessation, supported employment, daily living skills support, housing coordination and entitlements assistance.
Access, Eligibility and Next Steps
Creative Alternatives serves Baltimore City residents, or those willing to relocate to Baltimore City, through community based, in person care on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus, with staff on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The program itself is free and members use their own funds for certain living costs and their health insurance for medical, dental and specialized care.

- When recovery feels lonely, living alongside peers can change the tone of each day. In inpatient care, the people nearby are working toward the same kind of change.
- Outpatient
- People looking for individual counseling, group therapy, and relapse-prevention skills often find them in outpatient sessions.
- Aftercare support
- When a program ends, continuing care can take the form of outpatient sessions, peer groups, alumni contact where offered, or sober living referrals. Many people use several of these at once.
- Co-occurring disorders
- Treatment for co-occurring disorders puts both conditions in one plan instead of handling them one after the other.
- Sober living
