About Four Oaks Family and Children’s Services, Smith Center
Four Oaks Family and Children’s Services houses the Smith Center. They're based out in Cedar Rapids in Iowa. It’s a unique treatment hub that’s deeply rooted in the belief that healing starts when we stop asking, “What’s wrong with you?” and start asking, “What happened to you?” This trauma-informed approach sits at the heart of everything they do, including how they support youths with substance use and co-occurring behavioral issues.
A Holistic Approach to Substance Use and Life Challenges
Through programs like the Qualified Residential Treatment Program and the Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children, Four Oaks provides intensive care in a safe, structured environment for youth who need support for addiction, mental health or both. Their services are tailored to kids and teens, especially those facing major life obstacles like poverty, housing instability or childhood trauma.
What really stands out at Four Oaks is their TotalChild model. This isn't just about helping kids stop using drugs, it’s about figuring out what led them there in the first place. Maybe it's unmet mental health needs, unsafe living situations or the loss of a caregiver. Whatever the reason, they work with the whole family and community to provide wraparound care. That includes parenting support, housing resources, budgeting help, educational planning, and career prep for older youth. Addiction doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and Four Oaks treats it like the multifaceted issue it is
Helping Teens Grow into Healthy, Independent Adults
Once youth reach adulthood, the TotalChild model continues through workforce development. For those in recovery, this can be a game-changer. Four Oaks helps youth adults aged 18-26 build a future that includes education, job skills and real-wold work experience. This next step matters, especially for those whose earlier years were clouded by trauma or addiction.
