About Canku Teca Treatment Center
Canku Teca Treatment Center is a tribal addiction treatment provider in Lake Andes, South Dakota, offering culturally grounded intensive outpatient treatment for enrolled Native American adults.
Operated by the Yankton Sioux Tribe Substance Abuse Program since 1972, the center provides a continuum that includes assessments, outpatient care, transitional housing and aftercare, with intensive outpatient services as its central focus.
The program is built on the Red Road Approach, helping clients build a strong foundation for holistic, lifelong recovery.
Culturally Grounded Intensive Outpatient Treatment at Canku Teca
The intensive outpatient program serves enrolled male and female adult Native Americans experiencing chemical dependency, delivering at least 60 hours of structured counseling and education over 5 weeks.
The 20 bed facility maintains 24 hour coverage 7 days a week and under special circumstances eligible clients may reside on site while participating in outpatient treatment. Clients engage in group counseling, individual counseling and educational sessions.
These sessions are guided by the Red Road Approach, an Indigenous philosophy promoting holistic health. Traditional ceremonies are integrated through an on site 24 foot teepee and sweat lodge, allowing participants to incorporate cultural healing practices.
Your Path Through Treatment
Clients typically begin with an assessment that includes formal interviews and screening tools such as MAST and SASSI3 to guide diagnosis and treatment planning. Some individuals may participate in pre-treatment housing for short term stabilization before entering structured care.
The intensive outpatient program includes more than 60 hours of counseling, education and cultural activities delivered over 5 weeks. Following treatment, clients may receive up to 30 days of post treatment residential support and housing.
Ongoing aftercare focuses on relapse prevention through participation in twelve step or Red Road recovery groups.
