About Akeela Assessment Center
Akeela Outpatient Treatment in Anchorage, Alaska is a private nonprofit organization. Akeela is one of Alaska’s oldest and most diverse behavioral health providers. The organization is licensed by the Alaska Division of Behavioral Health.
The center accepts Medicaid, other state health insurance plans, and cash payments. Care is provided to clients who are uninsured and indigent through state grants. This particular facility houses Akeela’s outpatient services and the Women and Families Program.
Outpatient Programs for Substance Use or Co-Occurring Disorders
Men and women who assess at the ASAM I or II level are eligible for outpatient services here for substance use with co-occurring mental health disorders. Virtual sessions using telebehavioral health services are possible for clients with transportation issues or who are unable to visit the center.
Outpatient programs include traditional outpatient treatment as well as intensive outpatient programming (IOP), The IOP is more intensive with individual and group counseling for 12 to 18 weeks. Treatment will be chosen based on the level and duration of substance use by the client.
The client may be required to attend community programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Adult Children of Alcoholics, or programs from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The client may also be required to be part of a peer support network. Aftercare is supported by a relapse prevention program.
Program for Mothers and their Children
Outpatient programs are conducted in a mixed-gender setting but the Women and Families Program is more specialized. The Women and Families Program integrates substance abuse, serious mental health illness in adults, and emotional disturbances in children to provide a specialized program for mothers and children who need help.
Clients requiring inpatient residential treatment will be referred to the Akeela House Recovery Center which is for all genders or the Stepping Stones Residential Program for women and children. Daycare is provided for children while mothers attend treatment.
For those using the transit system, a bus stop is located just in front of the center. After a session a client may want to visit a park for relaxation or to allow children to play on the playground. Several parks are within a few miles including Valley of the Moon Park, Delaney Park, Resolution Park, and Elderberry Park.
