More Cincinnati women are finding their way into addiction treatment centers, and a growing number say same-day appointments made all the difference.
According to local treatment providers, reducing wait times is breaking down one of the biggest barriers women face when seeking help for substance use disorders.
More Cincinnati Women Are Seeking Addiction Treatment
Staff at BrightView Addiction Treatment Center in Cincinnati say they have seen a clear shift in who is walking through their doors.
Nursing director Chrissy Richard noted that women are increasingly seeking help, particularly for alcohol, prescription opioids, and benzodiazepines.
At Talbert House, another regional provider, the change is even more striking. About 25% of clients entering treatment in 2024 were women.
By 2025, that number had jumped to 40%. Dr. Kamaria Tyehimba, vice president at Talbert House, credited Hamilton County’s specialty courts, including its drug court, for encouraging more women to seek care.
What Is Driving Addiction in Women
Nationally, substance use among women has been on the rise, particularly among women in their 30s and 40s, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Women now account for roughly 45% of all individuals in drug treatment programs in the United States, per the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics.
Researchers have also identified what they call the “telescoping effect,” a pattern in which women progress from first use to full addiction more rapidly than men across nearly every substance category.
Biological factors play a key role: women have lower first-pass metabolic rates, meaning alcohol and other drugs are harder for their bodies to process, and dependency develops more quickly.
Understanding Opioid and Cocaine Addiction
Opioids, including prescription painkillers and illicit drugs like heroin, affect the brain’s reward system and can cause physical dependence after relatively short-term use.
Signs of opioid addiction include strong cravings, using more than intended, withdrawal symptoms when not using, and neglecting responsibilities.
Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that produces intense but short-lived euphoria, often leading to cycles of bingeing and crashing.
Common signs of cocaine addiction include erratic behavior, paranoia, financial problems, and an inability to stop despite wanting to.

How Same-Day Addiction Treatment Works in Cincinnati
Same-day addiction treatment allows people to begin assessment, counseling, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) often within hours of calling, with no waiting lists.
For many women, this matters because longer residential stays can feel impossible when children, jobs, and family obligations are in the picture.
One Cincinnati woman in recovery, identified only as Olivia, said she had previously left a two-month rehabilitation program early because she couldn’t be away from her children that long.
A same-day appointment at BrightView gave her access to care while still allowing her to return home.
“I had kids at home,” she explained in a video shared by BrightView. “I want to be able to just get something and then be able to go back home. And that’s what they did.”
Hamilton County’s drug court has also played a role. Peer recovery coaches like Lisa Hauser, herself six years in recovery, work with women transitioning out of court-mandated programs, helping them rebuild responsibility and routine.
“The ones that are pushing through, and they’re doing it, you watch them grow,” Hauser said. “It’s just so exciting.”
