Nevada residents struggling with addiction now have a new resource, and it couldn’t come at a more critical time.

While overdose deaths fell sharply across most of the U.S. in 2024, Nevada moved in the opposite direction, making it one of the hardest-hit states in the country.

A newly opened hospital in Henderson is directly addressing that gap by combining addiction treatment and serious medical care under the same roof, a first for the region.

Nevada’s Overdose Crisis by the Numbers

The statistics paint a troubling picture for Silver State residents. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 27% drop in overdose fatalities nationwide in 2024.

Nevada was one of only two states, alongside South Dakota, where deaths actually increased. In Southern Nevada specifically, overdose deaths from all drugs rose by nearly 32% between September 2024 and August 2025, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

Nevada’s challenges don’t stop at overdoses. The state ranked last in Mental Health America’s 2025 State of Mental Health in America report, which factors in everything from mental illness rates to the availability of mental health workers.

About 22% of Nevada adults struggle with substance use disorder, and nearly 23% of Nevada youth reported experiencing a major depressive episode in the past year.

What Makes Las Vegas Recovery Hospital Different

Las Vegas Recovery Hospital, a 68-bed facility located on the Dignity Health St. Rose Dominican Rosa de Lima campus in Henderson, opened as the region’s first acute-care hospital focused on treating both addiction and complex medical conditions at the same time.

The hospital is operated by Lion Health System, which runs similar facilities nationally. It was built specifically to serve patients who are too medically fragile for a traditional rehab program but who don’t get the ongoing support they need from a busy emergency room.

Patients at the facility receive round-the-clock care from addiction-certified physicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, social workers and recovery specialists.

Treatment plans are individualized and can address serious infections, heart and lung complications, neurological conditions and organ disease. These are conditions that often go untreated or undertreated when someone is also battling addiction.

“Our patients often arrive at their sickest and lowest points,” said Dr. Fred Ceppa of Lion Health System. “Stabilizing them in every aspect of their health is challenging, but also profoundly rewarding.”

Understanding Substance Use Disorder

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a medical condition in which a person’s use of drugs or alcohol causes significant problems in their daily life and health.

It affects the brain’s reward system, making it extremely difficult to stop without proper support and treatment.

Common signs include using more of a substance than intended, being unable to cut back despite wanting to, neglecting responsibilities, and continuing use even when it causes physical or emotional harm.

Many people with SUD also live with untreated medical conditions that complicate recovery, exactly the population Las Vegas Recovery Hospital was designed to serve.
