About Hoomau Ke Ola
Hoomau Ke Ola is a unique culturally focused addiction treatment program in Wai'anae, Hawaii. They provide residential treatment for adult men as well as intensive outpatient and general outpatient treatment for all genders. They also have a family education and support group and an alumni group.
This facility accepts multiple Hawaiian insurance plans and has self pay options as well. They accept clients from anywhere in Hawaii who are willing to travel to Wai'anae for treatment.
A Mix of Western and Hawaiian Residential Treatment Methods
What really caught my attention about this program is that it has a heavy emphasis on Hawaiian culture while also providing evidence based care. They have individual and group therapy using cognitive behavioral intervention, dialectical behavioral therapy and other common approaches.
But they also provide cultural curriculum, such as moʻokuauhau (genealogy), kūkulu kumuhana (statement of purpose), oli (chanting), malama aina (caring for and nurturing the land), paʻani kahiko (ancient games), hoe ka waʻa (canoe paddling) and much more.
You’ll also learn the basics of hula dancing in order to learn precision, perseverance and self discipline.
Outpatient Treatment and Family Support
Outpatient treatment services are also available at Hoomau Ke Ola. They have an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that supplies 9 to 15 hours of treatment services per week, and less intensive outpatient care that delivers three to nine hours of treatment per week.
The family support group also stood out to me. They take time to educate family members who are impacted by substance use. Topics include family systems, addiction and recovery and family healing along with discussions where loved ones can ask questions and share their stories.
