Louisiana Addiction Care for Mothers

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) recently initiated its first group of 11 Project M.O.M. pilot site hospitals to expand addiction treatment access statewide.

The Maternal Overdose Mortality initiative is a major step forward in addressing maternal overdose deaths statewide and closing crucial gaps in treating substance use disorder.

You can find a variety of addiction treatment centers in Louisiana to assist you or a loved one with seeking care.

Expanding Addiction Treatment for Mothers

Project M.O.M. intends to remove access barriers for prenatal support, emergency care and addiction care. Practitioners create safer and accessible pathways to recovery, while normalizing seeking help and reducing stigma and bias.

This program offers an integrated addiction treatment approach for expectant mothers and postpartum women struggling with substance use, including marijuana addiction.

Since 2018, accidental overdose has been the main cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women in Louisiana. “This isn’t just a statistic. It’s a double tragedy,” noted LDH Secretary Bruce D. Greenstein. “

He explains, “When we lose a mother, we risk the safety, stability, and future of her child.” His goal is to turn these so-called preventable deaths to “prevented” by saving every life possible.

Project M.O.M. plans to change that statistic with person-centered care and evidence-based addiction therapy approaches.

The LDH wants to ensure that pregnant and postpartum women have access to compassionate, coordinated and comprehensive services.

Louisiana Hospitals Offering Addiction Care Services

One thing important to LDH was making sure there were a variety of local options available to mothers seeking addiction recovery. LDH has partnered with the following catalyst sites to implement Project M.O.M.:

  • Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women
  • Lakeview Hospital
  • Lane Regional Medical Center
  • Ochsner American Legion Hospital
  • Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center
  • Ochsner St. Anne Hospital
  • Opelousas General Health System
  • Our Lady of the Angels Hospital
  • Rapides Regional Medical Center
  • Touro Hospital
  • Woman’s Hospital

All hospitals feature integrated clinical pathways to ensure timely and continuous care. They provide access to harm reduction services and universal verbal screenings for substance use disorders.

This interdisciplinary approach can reduce stigma and expand behavioral support to families new and old.
