About Delancey Street Foundation
Delancey Street Foundation is a residential self help organization in San Francisco, California. They provide a safe living space for people battling addiction, returning from prison, experiencing homelessness or dealing with other significant life challenges.
One great thing I noticed about them is that their program is completely free. As a peer run organization, they pool all of their resources to support each other. Any funds received are put towards the community. You can receive housing, food, clothing and education at no cost to you.
A Unique Recovery Approach in San Francisco
What stands out most to me is their unique recovery model. Established in 1991, this location was built mostly by its residents. They use a model rooted in education, change and social entrepreneurship. I like that they provide a family-like environment where you can feel supported by peers who personally understand your experiences.
A Focus on Vocational Training
Another great feature that caught my eye was their focus on vocational training. All of their locations are built and run by residents. You can access vocational services to gain marketable skills, such as accounting, purchasing and contracting.
They also help you earn your high school equivalency degree, and continuing education is available. You'll benefit from developing essential skills to find a fulfilling career that supports lasting recovery.
Many former residents mentioned transformational experiences and credited the demanding and tough love approach for their growth. Most clients appreciated the emphasis on peer support and the discipline they gained. Many reported improvements in their job and social skills after participating in the program.
