In 2020, methamphetamine was the number one cause of accidental overdose deaths. The average rate was 11.2 methamphetamine overdoses for every 100,000 people.
The next major cause of overdose deaths in 2020 was fentanyl, with an average rate of 9.5 deaths for every 100,000 people.
Cocaine, heroin, alcohol, and prescription opioids followed suit with average overdose death rates of 4, 3.7, 2.6, and 2 for every 100,000 people that same year, respectively.
The rate of methamphetamine overdose deaths increased by 78.7% between 2019 and 2020 while fentanyl overdoses increased by 136.6%.
During the entire year of 2021, there were approximately 2,957,817 opioid prescriptions written.
During that same year, Los Angeles County experienced 1,534 opioid-related overdose deaths. The county’s average rate of opioid deaths averaged 4.7 for every 100,000 people.
There were also 898 hospitalizations and 3,316 emergency department visits caused by opioid misuse in Los Angeles County in 2021.

Private Insurance
Every insurance provider in the U.S. is required by law to provide at least some coverage for mental health and substance abuse treatment. In California, residents should contact their insurance provider to confirm specific coverage with their carrier, including applicable copays.
Medi-Cal
Medi-Cal is California’s Medicaid program. Funded by federal and state taxes, this program pays for medical services for children and adults who have limited income. To qualify for Medi-Cal, California residents must meet income requirements and be one of the following: pregnant, responsible for a child under 21 years old, blind, disabled or a disabled family member, or 65 years or older.
California Medicare
California Medicare is a government program providing coverage to residents who are over the age of 65 or who have end-stage renal disease. California residents can use Medicare to cover the cost of rehab and other addiction treatment services; however, not all rehabs accept Medicare insurance.
