I recently heard that police officers struggling with alcohol use will now be granted 30 days of paid leave to attend an addiction treatment program. This follows recent news that at least six officers in Texas were arrested on drunk driving or public intoxication charges. As a social worker who has also worked in a first responder role, I know all too well that the stress of that type of job takes its toll on your mental health. It is not surprising to me — in fact, I suspect the number of people in the police force struggling with addiction may be higher — that police officers are coping with alcohol. It is a stressful job, often requires responding to dangerous situations, and there is a drinking culture in law enforcement. The fact the police department will now provide paid leave for treatment shows that they’re taking this issue seriously. I only hope that more officers feel comfortable getting treatment before it’s too late.
