About Stony Brook Counseling Center – Closed
Stony Brook Counseling Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was a facility that treated children, adolescents and adults. They allowed you to choose the therapist who was best matched to your needs. They also offered specialized treatment for LGBTQ+ individuals.
The center treated alcohol and drug dependency and underlying factors or co-occurring disorders. Underlying issues that may have addressed included abuse, anger, life transitions and stress
Specialty Therapies for Substance Use
One thing I liked about this facility is they utilize a variety of speciality therapies to help you in recovery. Gestalt therapy focused on you as a whole entity instead of defining you by one trait, episode or a substance use diagnosis. The therapy included role playing, reenactment and drawing or painting.
Eclectic therapy is a multi modal method that was customized to you and your needs. Different modes included behavior, interpersonal relationships, and biological processes. Existential therapy will show you your capacity for self awareness, your unique identity, the need to recreate yourself because life is constantly changing, and acceptance of anxiety as part of the human condition. Other therapies offered included cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing.
Family and Group Sessions To Support Recovery
Beyond individual therapy, the counseling center believed that family and group therapy are an important tool in the recovery process. In group therapy, clients could be able to connect with other individuals who are healing from addiction and receive encouragement.
Family therapy gave clients the opportunity to heal the damage addiction may have caused in their relationships and strengthen their support system. The facility was located near the Lauderhill Sports Park, where clients could enjoy some exercise after their treatment sessions.
