About Saint Barnabas Hospital Department of Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York, serves many departments and programs offered at the hospital. The type of substance use treatment you receive will likely be determined by one of these psychiatrists. It’s not far from Quarry Ballfields and Bathgate Playground.
Inpatient Substance Use Psychiatric Treatment
Your psychiatrist may refer you for inpatient treatment. You’ll be treated by a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, physician assistants, social workers, nurses, and activity therapists.
After admission, your psychiatrist will prescribe you medication. Substance use is hard on our bodies and we often develop physical ailments as a result. They’ll evaluate you for medical issues and treatment.
Milieu therapy uses socialization and your environment to treat you. As a form of psychotherapy, milieu ensures a safe environment that’s supportive and structured with routine and social interaction with your peers.
Group therapy will allow you to relate to your peers and receive encouragement and empathy. The center will encourage you to participate actively in your treatment and environment. In group therapy you learn how to cope with substance use disorder and strategies for avoiding relapses.
Discharge planning begins once you’re admitted. You’ll be referred to an outpatient treatment program that’ll support your recovery.
Psychiatric Outpatient Addiction Treatment
The psychiatric department serves the outpatient clinic as well. Outpatient treatment offers psychotherapy and psychopharmacological services. Therapy addresses substance use in addition to co-occurring disorders such as depression, anxiety, bereavement and mood disorders.
Adolescents can be treated for substance use by the David Casella Children Services Program. Ages 5-21 are accepted and families are involved in their child’s treatment. Substance use disorder and/or mental health disorders are treated.
Psychiatry in the Emergency Room
The psychiatric department is frequently dispatched to the emergency room. If you’re suffering a crisis from withdrawals or excessive substance use and are taken to the emergency room, a psychiatrist will evaluate you and determine the type of treatment you need.
