About Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Sacred Connections
Situated in El Paso, Texas, Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Sacred Connections is a unique behavioral health center with a focus on supporting the local indigenous community with cultural sensitivity. Their patients include children, adolescent, and adult members of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (Tigua Nation) and other Native American communities. I like that they incorporate addiction treatment approaches that help the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.
Emphasizing Tigua Culture in Behavioral Health
Upon arriving at the center, patients will appreciate that many elements of Tigua Nation culture are present in the approach to care. To make individuals feel welcomed and at ease, some of the therapy used includes native cultural elements such as sweat lodge ceremonies, talking circles, and drumming. Community elders are also an important part of these holistic healing practices.
Coordinating with Local Schools and Communities
In addition to treatment, the center promotes prevention education and is very connected to the local communities and school systems. They aim to make behavioral health an integrated part of life and they see wellness as an effort that the entire community should be involved in.
There are various green areas and parks in the area, such as Socorro Mission or La PurÃsima and the Rio Bosque Wetlands Park which may be used for quiet reflection and recreation activities. Different community centers are also in the area and may be able to provide patients with connections to continued support groups.
I think one of the best aspects of this center is that it honors and upholds Native American cultural traditions while reaching out to those that need support and treatment for addiction concerns. They have a 24-hour hotline so there’s always someone available if you need them.
