About New York Therapeutic Communities Serendipity 2 for Women
Madeline Randers Residence houses the Serendipity II Program of New York Therapeutic Communities (NYTC) in Brooklyn, New York. The women specifically are in the criminal justice system and have advanced substance use disorder diagnoses that require long term residential treatment.
Most women are referred by the courts, probation or parole agencies. You can also be accepted as a walk in with no referral.
Therapeutic Community Addiction Treatment
For some women this is an alternative to incarceration while for others it’s a transitional home between incarceration and reentering the community. The program uses the therapeutic community model with a disciplined hierarchical structure.
Residents in the home work together to regain self confidence, work through personal issues, and lean on each other while working on self improvement. Time at the home allows the women to continue their education, receive job training, and reunite with their families.
The majority of the clinical staff are themselves in recovery and serve as role models and counselors for the women. Treatment typically lasts for 12 months with outpatient treatment following.
Referral to Outpatient Programs
Their outpatient programs are located in Brooklyn and Jamaica. It’s not enough for us to complete residential treatment and then think we can reenter the community without added treatment and support. This might even mean going to Myrtle Village Green or the Star Spangled Playground across the street to unwind.
You’ll attend group and individual therapy sessions one to three times per week. You can examine your behavior, attitudes, and lifestyle to find the underlying issues that are causing you to use substances.
During group sessions, you and your peers work together through personal problems while encouraging and supporting each other. NYTC is recognized as a Home and Community Based Service provider by the New York State Department of Health’s Medicaid Program.
