About Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy
The Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy is an outpatient treatment center for substance use and mental health disorders. Treatment is available in person and virtually online via telehealth. You’ll find them based in Brooklyn, New York. It’s by the Brooklyn Museum and Prospect Park if you’re interested in exploring the area.
Treatment for Polysubstance Use
Polysubstance use is treated at the center. Many substance users use more than one substance to come down from a high, to be able to sleep, to enhance a high or to manage side effects.
This becomes very dangerous through drug interactions, overdosing after developing a high tolerance, and exacerbating mental illness. Polysubstance use is treated through counseling, dual diagnosis treatment, medication assisted treatment, art therapy, and creative outlets.
The center addresses simultaneous mental health disorders. Common underlying issues include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorders, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, and ODD.
Therapies for Substance Use Disorder
Cognitive behavioral therapy can be conducted with or without medication. It’s used to treat substance use disorder, PTSD, grief, and other mental health diagnoses. Cognitive therapy connects thoughts, emotions, and resulting behaviors. Relational therapy helps solidify your relationships.
Mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) leads you to focus on the present moment and not past experiences. Awareness of present thoughts and feelings will help you to accept them. MBCT is particularly useful for depression and stress.
Cognitive processing therapy treats PTSD for clients who have been through traumatic experiences. These experiences can cause us to be “stuck” in cycles of self blame or lack of trust in other people. We can reprocess our thinking patterns by understanding why we feel this way.
Experiential therapy includes expressive art therapy through art, music, and movement. You can express yourself non verbally, reduce stress, and learn therapy activities you can do on your own.
Culturally sensitive therapy treats cultural stigmas around mental health. This approach aligns with your culture and values while you explore your cultural identity and social difficulties related to it.
