The Neil Dobbins Center is a drug and alcohol rehab center located in beautiful Ashville, North Carolina. Mental health issues often accompany drug and alcohol addiction. This is why the Neil Dobbins Center focuses on treating both your substance abuse and its root cause. They understand the relationship between issues in your life and your drug addiction.

There are many things that contribute to drug and alcohol abuse. There is never only one cause of addiction. Addiction can be caused by:

  • Stress
  • Poor family situation
  • Physical illness
  • Mental illness
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Friends or family that use
  • Poor socioeconomic status
  • Boredom

Although these are not the only reasons why people become addicted they are some of the main ones. The Neil Dobbins Center understands this and seeks to correct the cause of the addiction rather than just treating the symptoms of addiction.

This treatment center offers drug and alcohol addiction treatment, residential services, and detoxification services. Although they are technically categorized as a rehab, they also offer additional medical treatment in order to provide a well rounded recovery.

A co-occurring disorder is one that occurs along with addiction. It can be a disease or disorder that is the cause of the addiction or one that is caused by the addiction. Some of the more common co-occurring disorders are:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Manic or bi-polar depression
  • Chronic pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • General and social anxiety
  • Post traumatic stress disorder
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Autism spectrum disorder

The Neil Dobbins Center is capable of treating these disorders along with a drug addiction. In some cases, you may find that your drug addiction is a form of self medication for an otherwise treatable illness. You can get treatment for the co-occurring or dual diagnosis disorder while you are receiving treatment for your addiction.

They believe that if you do not treat the whole person, you cannot treat the addiction. Most people are not simply an addict and addiction is not a moral failing. You cannot simply treat the addiction without treating other aspects of the addict’s life. This is why the Neil Dobbins Center believes in holistic treatment.

All addictions are different and all individuals are unique. The Neil Dobbins Center believes in treating each person as an individual rather than trying to fit everyone into the same treatment program. This means you will receive and individual treatment plan that is tailored just for your needs and goals. The treatment team works for you to help you in your recovery in a supportive and comfortable environment.

This is why the Neil Dobbins Center employs case managers to coordinate care, nurses and doctors for medical management and monitoring, and counselors to help you deal with the consequences of your addiction and develop healthy behaviors. Each member of the team is carefully selected and trained.

When you enter the treatment center, you will be evaluated for level of substance abuse and any other condition you may have. Although the treatment center treats both substance abuse and dual diagnosis patients, they also treat those that are only suffering from substance abuse issues. You do not have to have a co-occurring disorder to be treated at this center.

Since therapy is often the cornerstone of addiction and mental health treatment, the Neil Dobbins Center offers many different forms of therapy. Some of the more standard forms are:

  • Inpatient detoxification therapy – this is a medically assisted detoxification and the first step to getting off drugs. Detoxification is the technical name for the process of allowing yourself to go through withdrawal. When you stop using drugs or alcohol, your body needs to adapt. During this adaptation, you feel the symptoms of withdrawal unless you are taking medications to treat them. In medically assisted detoxification, you are evaluated and are assisted by medical personnel to make the process easier. This prevents dangerous, sometimes deadly withdrawal symptoms from having catastrophic consequences.
  • Individual talk therapy – individual talk therapy is a form of therapy that offers you a chance to speak one on one with a therapist. During talk therapy sessions, you will learn new techniques of dealing with cravings, addiction, the consequences of your addiction, and the possibility of relapse. The counselor acts as a guide in this instance and gives practical advice.
  • Group therapy – during group therapy, you interact with other addicts and a counselor. When you are in group therapy, you can share your story and hear the stories of others. It is an excellent way to help the isolation that many feel when they are in treatment and to discuss ideas for avoiding cravings and deal with the problems associated with both addiction and recovery.
  • Trauma therapy – many people become addicted because of a trauma in their life. Some of the traumas are domestic such as domestic violence while others are due combat in the military. There are others associated with assault or other traumatic events. Trauma effects every person differently. Some people take to drugs or alcohol to reduce the impact and escape. Trauma therapy helps you to deal with the trauma in a healthy way.
  • Family therapy – family therapy comes in many forms. In some forms, you sit and talk with different family members and a counselor to work out any problems that you might have. As you work out these problems, your relationship with your family improves. Another form of family therapy is to have the whole family meet and the counselor helps you to deal with the issues your family is experiencing because of your addiction. Most forms of family therapy are designed to improve your relationships and help your family accept you again.
  • 12 step therapy – 12 step therapy is an addict assisting addict type of program where there are clearly defined steps. These steps help you to deal with your addiction and build healthy sober relationships. After treatment the 12 step program may continue for years with you attending meetings whenever you feel the need for added support or help with cravings.

Each therapy can help to make sure that you learn the cause of your addiction, learn to deal with the cause of your addiction, and resolve the consequences of being an addict. These therapies are often used in combination with each other to make a more complete treatment program.
