About Suffolk County Department of Health
The Suffolk County Department of Health isn’t just a government office it’s actually the backbone of addiction and mental health services across the county. Their Division of Community Mental Health Hygiene Services, they coordinate with Sun River Health’s network for people with substance use issues, mental illness or developmental disabilities. Think of them as the hub that connects all the different pieces together so people can actually get help d without being bounced around endlessly.
They run opioid treatment programs in Riverhead, Haupapuge and Smithtown. These are structured outpatient clinics where people can get medication like methadone or buprenorphine. And they can get counseling too. Clinics are open early in the morning, six days a week in most locations so people can get the help they need before going to work or heading back home to take care of their families.
A Full Spectrum of Care
What’s different about Suffolk County is that they don’t just focus on one side of addiction. They integrated prevention, harm reduction, treatment and recovery all under one roof. That means they'll connect people with community resources and support, even if they’re not ready or able to quit using yet. It’s about keeping people safe while still leaving the door open for recovery when the timing feels right.
Sun River’s services at Riverhead also include medical and dental care. They also provide Naloxone training and harm reduction programs in English and Spanish. That way, you can address underlying conditions that might fuel your addictions.
Help for Kids and Families
They also know kids and families need just as much support. The Children’s Single Point of Access is there for families with kids aged 5 to 21 who are facing serious emotional struggles. Through this system, families can get connected to in-home support, Youth ACT programs or even residential treatment if a kid needs more time to heal.
And there’s something that’s really cool here too. The county even keeps an Opioid Settlement Fund Dashboard. Basically, it's a way to see how settlement money from pharmaceutical companies is actually being spent.
