About Shadow Mountain Recovery at Taos
Shadow Mountain Recovery Center, located in Taos, New Mexico, is a nationally accredited drug and alcohol addiction treatment center that boasts individualized care for adults who are struggling with not only addiction but mental health conditions, intimacy disorders, and eating disorders.
They're known in the area for their holistic treatment approaches and emphasize deep healing in a serene, home-like setting. Their levels of care include medical detox, gender-specific residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, standard outpatient treatment, and aftercare. They also treat dual diagnosis cases.
What to Expect at Treatment
Some treatment modalities they use include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, internal family systems, brain spotting, narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, and neural feedback. I was very impressed with this list and even more impressed with all the experiential and holistic therapies offered.
These include equine therapy that involves making connections with horses to boost your empathy and self-regulation; psychodrama, which is role-play based to process trauma; art therapy; music therapy; dance and movement therapy; yoga and mindfulness; labyrinth walking meditation, which is a spiritual and introspective journey; and even a martial arts-inspired movement therapy to build self-discipline, body awareness, and emotional control.
Other Forms of Support and Therapy
They have a family program that offers multi-day workshops and therapy sessions to include your loved ones in the recovery process. They also have an eating disorder program that is a separate track that focuses on nutritional counseling, medical oversight, body image therapy, and meal support.
I like that they even include an intimacy disorders program that focuses on healing attachment wounds and relational trauma. On top of all this, you can benefit from their alumni and aftercare support, offering weekly alumni groups and different events and resources that can help you prevent relapse.
