About Nicasa
Tucked between Lake Michigan and the peaceful trails of Illinois Beach State Park was Nicasa’s Zion location. It felt like a quiet anchor for anyone who's feeling overwhelmed, stuck or just ready for a change. Since way back in 1966, they've been doing the work of helping people and families all over Lake County heal from substance use, mental health struggles and everything in between. However, their Zion location closed and was torn down.
When they were open, this center specialized in care for youths. They offered support for teens who are starting to slip into risky behaviors, including gambling addictions. What made them especially solid is how much they thought about the whole picture, like family dynamics, housing insecurity, criminal justice involvement, and cultural identity. They didn’t just treat symptoms. They really went after the root causes.
Built on Decades of Real Progress
From opening the first school-based health center in Round Lake to launching innovative jail reentry and veteran wellness programs, Nicasa has continued to be at the forefront of community-centered care. They’ve earned national recognition for their teen gambling outreach and have distributed Narcan to overdose hotspots across Lake County.
On top of that, they’ve been awarded over 20 federal grants and partner with nearly 200 organizations across Illinois. Their programs reach everyone from middle school students to chronically homeless adults exiting jail.
A Strong Focus on Community Healing
Even though their Zion location is closed, they have other centers nearby that can assist you.
Nicasa works closely with schools, jails, first responders and local leaders to make sure support is reaching the people who need it most. Their Peer Support Specialists aren’t just trained but they’ve walked the walk. And their family advocacy program is all about getting parents, guardians and kids back on the same page. Plus, services are offered in both Spanish and English, with interpreters available if needed.
