About THRIVE Recovery Community and Outreach Center
THRIVE Suffolk in Hauppauge, New York, is partnered with Family and Children’s Association, Long Island Recovery Association (LIRA), Families in Support of Treatment (FIST) and the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) to provide community services. It’s off the 495 Expressway and not far from Bretton Woods Park.
The center provides free transportation to their services and to and from local treatment centers and recovery homes. Peers in recovery and volunteers operate THRIVE centers.
Center volunteers bring support workshops and activities to clients who are in treatment at local treatment centers and recovery homes. Workshops and meetings are available seven days per week at the center.
Services for the Client’s Family
Several meetings are available for the addict’s family. Beating Hearts is a group meeting for those who have lost a loved one by overdose.
Narcan training teaches attendees how to reverse an opioid overdose using narcan and supplies each attendee with a kit. Other family support meetings include al-anon for beginners, al-anon, FIST family support groups, and grief support groups.
Sober Activities to Replace Substances
If you’ve a hard time trying to stay busy during times you would normally be using substances, the center offers fun activities. This includes afternoon movies, mystery at the manor (a live action game), summer art night, trail of truth tombstone paintings, and a creative crochet group.
Therapeutic Activities for Addicts
After completing treatment, many people still need support from peers and through therapeutic activities. Several therapeutic workshops include reiki and sound bath workshops, guided meditation, nutrition workshops, and comfort therapy dogs.
Substance use support groups include women’s and men’s gender specific groups, narcotics anonymous, alcoholics anonymous, emotional sobriety, matching calamity with serenity, harm reduction services, dual recovery, Lira one recovery meeting, and codependents and 12 Steps.
