About ADA Women’s Center—Galveston
Just a short walk from some of Galveston Island’s famous landmarks, ADA Women's Center in Galveston, Texas is a residential addiction treatment home for adult women. The neighborhood is quiet and close to Stewart Beach with its long stretch of sand, perfect for walking.
Helping Women Overcome Addiction
ADA stands for Drug and Alcohol Abuse. The women who come here may be recovering from a methamphetamine use disorder or from alcohol. It doesn’t matter what the substance is, the addiction treatment program can help beat it.
The residential program is intensive. The women in the program attend individual counseling and group sessions, but they also participate in daily 12-Step meetings. One woman said, “We have structure and discipline here,” but she also mentioned that, “We are here because we want to be.”
Developing Life and Work Skills
Daily chores are part of the routine, but the chores aren’t just tasks. They help build a sense of responsibility and accountability, two things that are essential in addiction recovery.
Occupational therapy is another part of recovery. It gives women a chance to practice life and job skills in a supportive space.
Nutrition and parenting classes are also part of the schedule. Nutrition classes teach habits that help improve well being. Parenting classes provide tools to strengthen family relationships.
Time to Relax and Grow Friendships
In the middle of the structure, there’s still time to unwind. Yoga and meditation time is something many of the women enjoy.
Each week, the group goes shopping, giving everyone a chance to buy things they need or enjoy a treat together. Family visits happen once a week and may be handled over Zoom.
Paying for treatment at ADA Women’s Center should never be something that prevents someone from getting help. They accept insurance and self-pay, but for women who don’t have financial resources, staff will work to come up with a plan.
