This Fourth of July, Morris County residents can support addiction recovery in New Jersey by lacing up for a 5K that funds meals, shelter, and long-term recovery programs across the state. While The Garden State already features a wide array of inpatient and outpatient programs, but overdoses continue to afflict residents, causing many community organizers hope to generate greater awareness.

The Market Street Mission 5K Race for Recovery is set for 9 a.m. on Independence Day at Central Park of Morris County in Greystone Park, 1 Governor Chris Christie Drive in Parsippany-Troy Hills. The morning also features a 2 Mile Freedom Walk and a Kids Fun Run. A virtual 5K option stays open through July 4.

The Race Supports Everyone

Proceeds benefit Market Street Mission, a nonprofit in Morristown that provides free meals, overnight shelter, and a long-term residential recovery program for people struggling with basic needs issues like hunger and homelessness, which can fuel addiction across New Jersey. The organization is a 501(c)(3) and isn’t subsidized by government funding, so community events like this one help keep its services free to those in need.

Registration was originally listed at $30 for the 5K and $30 for the 2 Mile Freedom Walk, and prices increased after June 30. The Kids Fun Run, a no-shirt kids option, and a VIP 5K package were also options. Organizers also announced a second Race for Recovery on October 24 on the Ocean Grove Boardwalk, with a Mission 2 Mission bundle that saves 25% per event.

Understanding Addiction Recovery

Recovery from a substance use disorder is a long-term process, and community support plays a real role in it. Events like this one raise money for residential programs and healthy peer support systems while helping reduce the stigma that keeps many people from asking for help.

Common signs that someone may need support include using more than intended, withdrawing from family and responsibilities and an inability to cut back despite wanting to.
