Minnesota Community Support Helps People in Recovery Rebuild

Minnesota chef and TV host Andrew Zimmern relayed how housing, work, shared meals and personal connection helped him build a new life. Zimmern is a public advocate and delivered a keynote address at the Minnesota Association of Resources for Recovery and Chemical Health conference in St. Paul.

Communities & Recovery

Zimmern described his past alcohol and drug addiction, homelessness and a suicide attempt. But he realized he wanted to live, which spurred his path to recovery.

After leaving treatment, neighbors offered him a place to stay, hired him for odd jobs and invited him to dinner.

“I was loved up by this community. Some people come and need rehabilitation. I needed habilitation. I did not know how to live.”

His wording deliberately points to daily skills and stability that remain fragile after formal care ends.

That community focus also reflects how he now approaches recovery in others. Rather than beginning with a list of stern instructions of what not to do, he shares his own experiences and looks for common ground. Zimmern described the response he often receives as recognition.

“That’s me too. That’s how I felt.”

Connection Before Solutions

Zimmern called his approach “co-regulation before operationalizing.” This means emotional connection before anything else. He also used the phrase “be the dog” to mean staying close and offering companionship to those who need it rather than immediately trying to fix someone.

Families know that can mean listening before listing treatment options or issuing ultimatums. It doesn’t require accepting harmful behavior or ignoring safety. A calm conversation may create more room for help than a lecture during a crisis.

Community support can continue beyond events like charity walks. Practical help might include transportation to appointments, an alcohol-free invitation, regular check-ins or assistance finding work and stable housing.

Zimmern’s account offers a useful reminder that clinical treatment and community relationships have different roles in the same person’s life.
