Louisiana now ranks as the fifth most gambling-addicted state in the country, according to a new 2026 study from the personal finance company WalletHub, a finding that has renewed attention on the need for addiction treatment centers in Louisiana.
The study compared all 50 states across 20 metrics grouped into two categories: how gambling-friendly a state is, and how well it handles gambling problems and treatment.
For a state with a long gambling history, from riverboat operations to today’s major commercial casinos, the ranking is not entirely surprising. But it puts a number on a problem that affects families across the state.
What the Louisiana Numbers Show
Louisiana placed fourth nationally for gambling-friendliness and 25th for gambling problems and treatment, which combined to land it at fifth overall.
The state ranked first in the country for the legality of sports gambling, seventh for gaming machines per capita, and 12th for casinos per capita. It also placed 10th for gambling-related arrests per capita.
In other words, residents have unusually broad access to legal wagering, while the state’s capacity to help people who develop a problem sits closer to the middle of the pack.
WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo noted that gambling addiction can damage lives much like alcohol and drug addiction, and that people prone to it may do better in places where opportunities to gamble are less constant.
The ranking arrives as the U.S. gambling industry continues to grow, generating a record $78.7 billion in revenue last year.
Understanding Gambling Addiction
Gambling disorder is a recognized behavioral addiction. It activates many of the same brain reward pathways that drugs and alcohol do, which is why it can be so hard to stop despite mounting harm.
Researchers estimate it affects roughly 1 to 3 percent of U.S. adults. Common signs of a gambling problem include chasing losses by betting more to win back money, lying to family about how much time or money is going to gambling, being unable to cut back, borrowing or stealing to keep gambling, and growing financial distress.
Because the consequences are often financial and emotional rather than physical, the problem can stay hidden longer than substance use.
Why Access to Care Matters
A state can rank among the most gambling-addicted partly because of how easy gambling is to access and partly because of gaps in treatment and support.
For Louisiana residents, the practical takeaway is straightforward: help exists, and treatment works.
Gambling addiction often occurs alongside other conditions, including depression, anxiety, and alcohol or drug use.
Treatment commonly includes cognitive behavioral therapy, support groups such as Gamblers Anonymous, and care for any co-occurring substance use or mental health concerns.
Many of the same Louisiana facilities that treat drug and alcohol addiction also address behavioral addictions like gambling.
