Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is a nonprofit healthcare provider operating in Worcester, Massachusetts. Providing rooms for over one hundred patients, the facility offers residential nursing and rehabilitation services in the form of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language pathology. The center follows an Eastern Orthodox Christian ethos in its efforts to provide equally compassionate care to all patients without discrimination. Each resident is treated as a human being deserving of dignity and respect, and the center strives to provide each resident with the comforts and security of home, along with the maximum amount of independence and self-sufficiency that they can manage.
The center provides both short-term and long-term care for its residents. Previously hospitalized residents typically arrive via ambulance, when it is determined that there is a medical need for them to receive rehabilitation. The treatment itself is usually covered by insurance providers or Medicare. Residents typically share their rooms with one other patient, though there are a limited number of private rooms which are sometimes available. Patients’ needs are assessed upon arrival, and a therapy schedule is drawn up according to each individual’s condition. Residents have access to a telephone, television, and a number of on-site amenities designed to provide the comforts of home. Additionally, family members and other guests are always encouraged to visit.
As a religious organization, the facility believes in the spirit of hospitality as typified by Abraham in the Book of Genesis. However, Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center has been taking advantage of the latest medical treatments and a state-of-the-art facility since its founding in 1994. Therefore, the center has taken the idea of this hospitality and extended it to those in need of help in the modern age. Patients seeking rehabilitation, skilled nursing care, and short-term or long-term care—as well as their family members—will find all the comforts of home at the facility, along with a capable and trained staff ready to help them begin the healing process. The mission statement of Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center states that each patient should be served with “confidence, warmth, compassion, and understanding.” With even the most cursory of glances at the facility’s many services and amenities, it becomes readily apparent that this goal has been realized.
Going along with its efforts to provide as home-like an environment as possible, Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center features central air conditioning, an attractive courtyard and patio, and spacious individual rooms with telephones and televisions. As the organization adheres to a Christian philosophy, residents can also enjoy religious services and pastoral counseling at the on-site chapel. Further taking care of patients’ spiritual and emotional needs, the center also provides weekly liturgy and rosary services, as well as music and memory therapy.
Additional amenities include an on-site beauty parlor and barber shop, a day room with large-screen televisions, home-style dining, and a laptop/computer access area for residents. The green, landscaped lawn scattered with comfortable benches further enhances the impression that residents can recuperate in a familiar, calm environment while receiving the care they need. The elegant dining room is elevated by fine linens and china, and the menus are designed with the “Resident-Centered Dining Program” in mind. Each day features a made-from-scratch soup, as well as a selection of freshly baked goods. Any residents whose birthdays happen to fall during their stay at Holy Trinity will also receive a special birthday menu from the chef.
Holy Trinity has been recognized by the quality of its service and home-style amenities by being awarded the 2013 American Health Care Association Bronze Award. This award was designed to recognized facilities which have demonstrated exemplary care for seniors and individuals with disabilities. The center has also received the 2012 GROW (Growing and Readying Our Workforce) award from the Central Massachusetts Workforce Development Partnership. The receipt of this award has shown that the facility is committed to providing an excellent clinical rotation among its students and staff in order to create a kind, caring, and patient-focused environment. By providing opportunities for staff and residents alike, the center has paved the way not only with its amenities and facilities, but also with its treatments and therapy.
Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab provides three types of therapy in order to bring their residents back to peak condition: physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language pathology. Physical therapy is designed to maximize a patient’s ability to function independently via the use of various therapeutic techniques.¬¬¬ Physical therapy plans are based on the individual needs of patients. After completing a screening assessment and complete evaluation, patients can work on activities such as walking, dressing, and stair climbing in order to achieve realistic goals of mobility and self-sufficiency. The Virginia H. Farah Foundation Rehabilitation Suite is an excellent on-site facility offering physical rehabilitation equipment such as parallel bars, exercise balls, stairs, and ramps. The suite even offers a large-screen television so that patients can enjoy virtual entertainment while remaining active, playing games such as virtual bowling.
Occupational therapy is also provided at Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center. This is a type of therapy that addresses the physical activities required by daily life. At Holy Trinity, this aspect of recovery involves daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and home management. If patients are capable of achieving a degree of independence in these areas, they will be in a better position to enjoy their lives to the fullest. Pending physician approval, patients will be assessed to determine any areas of decreased functional abilities, and an occupational therapy plan will be developed accordingly. In combination with regular physical therapy, this can be an excellent tool to achieve maximum potential independence.
The third type of therapy offered at Holy Trinity is speech and language pathology. Patients experiencing difficulty with swallowing, language, speech, and cognition (thought processing) will benefit from this type of treatment. Effective communication is a prerequisite to attaining any degree of independence and functioning, and the elements of speech and language are closely intertwined. When offered in conjunction with physical and occupational therapy, speech and language therapy offers an outstanding prospect of full recovery.
Regardless of the type or types of therapy that a patient is utilizing, the duration of services is entirely suited to the needs of the individual; there is no strict therapy schedule. Services are offered six to seven days per week, and the average length per session is approximately two hours. Sessions are conducted on a 1:1 basis so that each patient receives the full, individualized attention of a licensed therapist. When a resident has reached his or her maximum level of independence and no longer requires frequent sessions, a rehabilitative nursing program is offered to maintain that patient’s level of functioning while awaiting discharge. This ensures that the skills learned in therapy will transition reliably into the home or independent living environment.
Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab believes that each resident deserves to be recognized as an individual, and its entire treatment philosophy is based on this idea. As such, each program is highly specialized and always overseen by an attending physician. Therapy session duration and schedules are based on the specific needs of each patient. Physical and occupational therapy are conducted only after an initial assessment is held in order to determine the individual’s specific areas of need. This level of dedication even extends as far as the center’s dining services, where residents are able to select their own meals and celebrate their own birthdays.
As suggested above, Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center prides itself on offering as home-like an environment as possible for its residents. The staff believes that when preparing patients for independent functioning (whether they will return home or proceed to an assisted living facility upon discharge), the therapeutic environment should reflect the situation in which the patient will eventually be expected to function. This is achieved through the use of familiar amenities (fine dining, barber shop and beauty salon, attractive grounds, entertainment via television and internet, etc.) and by encouraging guests to visit patients at any time. Indeed, family and caregivers are encouraged to attend therapy sessions in accordance with the patients’ wishes. Holy Trinity further embraces visitors by offering training sessions designed to help family members to provide continuing care for their loved ones after they are discharged and have returned home. This is intended to make the transition from rehabilitation to independent functioning as smooth as possible for all parties involved.
Holy Trinity is more than just a physical rehabilitation center; it is also acutely aware of the importance of addressing patients’ spiritual and emotional needs. Physical independence does not develop in a vacuum, and these less tangible elements of residents’ psyches are of equal importance. As part of the facility’s Orthodox mission, a number of religious services are conducted to this end. Divine Liturgy is held every Wednesday morning, Holy Rosary is held every Tuesday afternoon, Catholic and Protestant services are held every month, and Christmas services and celebrations are held every year. Additionally, the facility is associated with one dozen churches as part of the Council of Eastern Orthodox Churches of Central Massachusetts. While Holy Trinity is committed to providing the highest level of care to each patient, regardless of his or her religion, their philosophy ensures that they approach each patient’s treatment with the respect and dignity they deserve.
Staff members at Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehab Center are highly trained and represent the most capable and compassionate professionals in their field. Because the facility is committed to providing opportunities for personal and professional growth amongst its staff, it is able to foster an environment where employees genuinely want to be there and want to perform to the best of their considerable abilities. This can be seen in everyone from the kitchen staff to the licensed therapists who conduct physical therapy with residents.
Holy Trinity has trained its Registered Nurses with Masspro, which is a leading performance improvement organization founded by the Massachusetts Medical Society. This allows the staff to provide the best quality of care for residents. The staff has also participated in the Advancing Excellence campaign, which is a major initiative established to achieve the highest level of physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being for residents. Holy Trinity has also participated in the Massachusetts Senior Care Association and the IMPACT/Galaxy Project, which aims to improve communicate in the nursing home environment. The result of all of these initiatives is to guarantee a highly trained and highly capable staff. Patients of Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center can rest assured that their physical rehabilitation is in the right hands.
