Since 1973, Evergreen Treatment Services (ETS) has been a private non-profit offering evidence and research-based substance abuse treatment and social services in Washington state. Our Seattle Clinic offers Medication-Assisted Treatment for individuals suffering from addictions to opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain pills throughout King County and surrounding areas.

Our addiction treatment services integrate daily methadone or buprenorphine dispensing with other important therapeutic interventions such as counseling and effective engagement with medical providers. We are dedicated to transforming the lives of our patients and their communities through quality, effective, cutting-edge substance abuse treatment and services that include therapy, medical monitoring and drug screening. Evergreen Treatment Services also supports the REACH team, an organization that provides street-based outreach and case management services to adults outside the greater Seattle area.

We are a private, 501c3 non-profit organization with a staff of interdisciplinary addiction specialists who have advanced degrees in psychiatry, medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, counseling and acupuncture. Evergreen Treatment Services applies a comprehensive treatment philosophy that understands the benefits of pharmaceutical therapies working in conjunction with counseling. Studies show that longer terms of methadone or buprenorphine treatment result in markedly improved rates of patient success. In fact, the greatest patient benefits from Medication-Assisted Treatment are reaped in the first full year of treatment.

At Evergreen Treatment Services, we believe that opiate addiction is a treatable medical condition, and those who suffer from the disease are deserving of effective treatments provided with dignity and respect. We have the expertise to guide patient recovery and prevent relapse, so that our patients can stabilize and begin rebuilding their lives and pursuing their dreams.

At Evergreen Treatment Services, we provide a warm, comfortable, understanding environment for individuals suffering from addiction to opiates such as heroin and prescription pain medications to benefit from patient-centered substance abuse treatments and social services using the best research-based technologies and interventions. We get involved in our communities to educate and advocate for the patients we serve. We provide capable and compassionate care in a healthy, engaging, welcoming environment for both staff and patients.

We are professional and ethical, committed to growing responsibly, sustainably, mindfully, creatively and strategically, while always keeping the spirit of collaboration alive. We appreciate and value diversity and difference and actively promote growth and autonomy. We work with patients to help them achieve their recovery goals and grow to become independent from the facility when they feel ready. Our holistic approach cultivates balance and wellness in all areas of life, and our innovative programs initiate and embrace change. Our customized recovery plans evolve with cutting edge research, as well as adapt to suit changes made necessary by patient progress.

Treatment at Evergreen Treatment Services begins when you contact the clinic closest to you and complete a screening over the phone. Then you make an appointment for an assessment, which will be conducted by intake staff. This is followed by a complete physical, where you will give a urine sample for testing, and start your medication. Within the first four weeks of starting treatment, you will attend a patient orientation, and throughout your treatment with methadone or buprenorphine, you will attend regular meetings with your counselor to facilitate your recovery journey.

At Evergreen Treatment Services, we provide Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), an evidence-based therapeutic approach that integrates mentally and physically stabilizing medications with support services such as medical monitoring, drug screening, and counseling.

We offer both individual and group counseling. Individual, or one on one counseling allows patients to work intensively with their therapists on specific issues of concern, while group counseling allows them to give and receive support, insight and understanding in a way that provides the same amount of strength whether the patient is the one giving or receiving.

Evergreen Treatment Services provides the gold standard in opiate addiction treatment by combining effective, federally-accredited rehabilitative services, case management, medical testing and education with the right medications in the right dosages for the right individuals. Medications include methadone, buprenorphine (Subutex), and buprenorphine combined with naloxone (Suboxone). This approach supports patients as they do the work required to address psychological addiction issues along with any co-occurring mental health problems that they may also be suffering.

Prolonged opioid abuse damages the brain’s neurotransmitter system in ways that take time to heal. Opiate drugs bind to opioid receptors in the brain, blocking pain signals and stimulating the release of unnatural amounts of dopamine, which reward and reinforce drug seeking behavior. Soon, the brain attempts to remedy the unnatural flood of dopamine by shutting down opioid receptors and reducing the amount of dopamine that is produced. As a result, addicts experience dysthymia, a condition marked by a persistent low mood and an inability to find enjoyment in life.

Appropriate doses of effective addiction treatment medications buy patients brains and bodies the time to heal and grow by preventing relapse and stabilizing brain chemistry. Stabilization provides patients with the mental focus and emotional readiness to tackle the many psychological, social, behavioral and environmental concerns involved in recovering from opiate abuse.

Extensive scientific research has proven that patients’ recovery outcomes are greatly improved with the application of the following services:

  • Physical examinations
  • Assessment and treatment planning
  • HIV and Hepatitis C testing, education and counseling
  • Psychoeducational groups
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Regular, random drug screens
  • Methadone or buprenorphine-based medication
  • Acupuncture

The Opioid Treatment Program at Evergreen Treatment Services begins with patients coming into the clinic each day for methadone or buprenorphine medication that is dispensed by our nursing staff. Patients are monitored to determine how well they are responding to the medications while also benefiting from intensive, structured, daily treatment interventions.

Over time, as patients progress in their recovery, they may move onto less structured services, which allow their medications to be dispensed in weekly, biweekly, or monthly take home quantities. The current, average cost of Medication-Assisted Treatment at Evergreen Treatment Services is $18 a day. This cost is insignificant in comparison with the high cost and high risk of continued abuse of illicit drugs and/or prescription medications. We also accept Medicaid and most other forms of health insurance.

Evergreen Treatment Services understands that the United States is currently confronting an epidemic of opioid abuse that has resulting in shocking escalations in opiate use disorders and opioid-related overdose and death. Medication-Assisted Treatment has been proven the most effective approach to support addiction recovery, which is why it has become the standard of care in the field.

Opioid use disorder is diagnosed when an individual exhibits a problematic pattern of opioid abuse that results in clinically significant distress or impairment. Addicts form a maladaptive, psychological relationship to opiate drugs that favors drug seeking and using behaviors at the expense of other life concerns. Evergreen Treatment Services understands that opioid use disorder or addiction is a chronic, relapsing disease of the brain—a medical condition much like hypertension or diabetes, which cannot be cured, but can be effectively managed with the right medications and support services.

Opioid abuse alters individual brain chemistry, damaging the brain’s reward system, its decision-making processes, and its functioning in regards to the experience of pleasure and pain. This is why Medication-Assisted Therapy is so important. Medications such as methadone or buprenorphine stabilize brain chemistry while patients work on their recovery issues.

To keep in good standing with Evergreen Treatment Services, patients must comply with the prescribed treatment protocol, which includes:

  1. Abstaining from alcohol and non-prescribed drugs.
  2. Attending the clinic for each day they are expected for medication dispensing. Patients usually begin with six daily visits per week, with a take home dose given for Sunday. Patients must agree to responsibly and safely store any medications they are given as take homes.
  3. Registering all newly filled prescription medications within three days of getting them from the pharmacy.
  4. Working with counselors on an individualized treatment plan.
  5. Participating in weekly individual counseling for the first 90 days, or longer. The frequency of counseling sessions may be reduced over time if patients and treatment advisors agree it is appropriate. The counseling schedule is ultimately determined by the counselor.
  6. Attending the required patient orientation group within the first 4 weeks after intake.
  7. Attending the required education session on communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and family planning within the first 2 months after intake.
  8. Informing all outside medical providers and prescribers of the patient’s participation in Medication-Assisted Treatment. This will keep patients safe, while allowing them to receive the highest quality care.
  9. Signing information releases for coordination of care when requested.
  10. Participating in random urinalysis drug testing at least once per month.

At Evergreen Treatment Services, we are committed to partnering with medical providers in the community, to ensure that our patients continue to receive the best possible care. We also advocate for patients and educate communities and community medical providers about the importance and efficacy of Medication-Assisted Treatment in the management of opioid addiction.

These treatments are the medical standard of care for addictions to heroin or other opiates such as prescription pain medications because they work. Numerous studies and extensive research has shown that patients receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment from quality treatment providers such as the compassionate staff at Evergreen Treatment Services have a much greater success rate when it comes to long-term recovery outcomes.

Furthermore, studies show that when Medication-Assisted Services are made available to individuals in need, the surrounding community benefits through a marked improvement in problems associated with expensive emergency services, homelessness, and property crime. Cost-benefit analyses of the impact that Medication-Assisted Services have on communities show that a 4 to 5 dollar return is realized for every 1 dollar spent on MAT.
