Flunitrazepam is a CNS depressant more often known by its brand name Rohypnol. This drug has been marketed as an anti-anxiety medication and muscle relaxant, but unfortunately, it causes a number of serious side effects, chief among them, addiction. In order to put an end to its uncontrolled abuse, many individuals require intensive rehab in a treatment center.
Flunitrazepam Addiction and Inpatient Rehab
Inpatient treatment may often be necessary for those who become addicted to flunitrazepam. According to the Center for Substance Abuse Research, “Regular use of Rohypnol results in increased tolerance to the drug, requiring users to take larger doses over time to achieve the same effect.” It can also cause dependence as well as severe and sometimes life-threatening withdrawal symptoms (such as seizures).
Finding not only an inpatient center but also the right facility can be extremely important to recovery.
What Should I Look for in Inpatient Care?
Flunitrazepam rehab can be complicated, which is why inpatient care is often necessary. A person recovering from this specific type of substance abuse might have experienced issues with mood changes, dangerous or psychotic behavior, confusion, and other effects that will need to be worked out in treatment.
In addition, the withdrawal syndrome associated with benzodiazepines can be severe, even deadly, which is why someone in treatment for flunitrazepam abuse may need intensive medical as well as psychological care (Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior).
Many people who experience issues with flunitrazepam abuse and addiction have also suffered from trauma and/or sexual assault. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, “While many sexual predators lace unsuspecting victims’ drinks with the drug, others offer Rohypnol to victims who consume the drug without understanding the effects it will produce.”
Amnesia is one of the effects of the drug that makes this kind of abuse possible, and there is a possibility that someone in treatment for this type of substance abuse will unearth memories that could be devastating. Therefore, it is important for the rehab program you choose to be sensitive toward and prepared for this possibility.
Flunitrazepam addiction can occur just as other substance use disorders do, and those suffering from additional issues (like comorbid mental disorders, medical problems, transmitted diseases caught during or as a result of drug use, etc.) must receive more intensive care.
Inpatient centers must be prepared for the needs of flunitrazepam addicts, and you, in addition, must understand what your treatment will likely require. Like most other addiction syndromes, a combination of medication and behavioral therapy is necessary for recovery from flunitrazepam addiction, but these other issues must also be taken into account.
Choosing the Best Option: How Do I Know the Program is Best for Me?
Choosing the best option for your recovery is based heavily on your needs as an individual and your personal situation. Have you suffered from sexual assault? Do you have another comorbid mental or physical disorder that requires attention and treatment? Do you need help finding a home, finding work, or relating to others? All of these issues can be addressed, and treatment for them should be a part of a well-rounded recovery program (National Institute on Drug Abuse).
It will also be incredibly important for you to feel comfortable in your rehab center. If you have suffered from sexual assault or another similar issue, you may choose to be in a program with only individuals of your same gender or others who have experienced this issue.
If you do not feel comfortable in your treatment center, you will not be able to have a proper recovery and your treatment will not be as successful. You can know if your rehab center makes you feel comfortable before choosing to attend treatment thereby taking a tour of the facility.
In addition, you can also determine if the program is right for you if
- The staff makes you feel safe and cared for
- The facility is clean and relaxing
- The program is in a comfortable price range for your budget (including the amount your insurance is able to pay for)
- You feel your needs will be met by the treatments and care offered at the facility
