The Joseph S. Massie Unit is part of the Allegany County Addiction Services and Health Department. It is located in the beautiful mountains of Cumberland, Maryland in the Thomas B. Finan Center. As addiction and alcoholism becomes more of an issue in today’s society Allegany County’s Health Department recognized the need for a complete and comprehensive drug treatment and detoxification facility. In response to this need, they created the Allegany County Health Department Addiction Services, Joseph S. Massie Unit.

This inpatient and outpatient facility offers quality care for all forms and all levels of drug and alcohol addiction. They provide short term residential treatment for detoxification and long term residential care for those suffering from severe addictions or co-occurring disorders that need additional time to bring about complete recovery. They also have a comprehensive outpatient care program for those suffering from addiction who have obligations to work, school, or family that keeps them from being able to attend residential care.

They provide detoxification services using methadone detoxification, methadone maintenance, buprenorphine, and Suboxone. They also have Narcan on site to prevent overdose during treatment.

The Joseph S. Massie Unit of Allegany County offers treatment for everyone including those suffering from HIV or AIDS, co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis disorders, pregnant and post partum women, and those with hearing disabilities. They provide a wide range of services and personalized treatment.

The average length of treatment at the Joseph S. Massie facility is 28 days which they consider the minimum amount of time someone can spend in treatment and receive the full benefits of detoxification and counseling. They also have an aftercare or continuing care program to help prevent relapse and relapse related overdose.

It is important to note that the length of your stay is individualized after your initial assessment. Each program is tailored to meet your needs and a personalized treatment plan is created to ensure that you get the most out of your time at the Joseph S. Massie Unit.

They believe in a holistic approach to healing and addiction medicine. This means that they treat the whole person rather than just the symptom of addiction. With this holistic approach they treat your body by helping you make nutritious meals and good dietary choices along with regular exercise. They treat your mind through counseling and therapy services. They help you with your family and the life circumstances that brought about your addiction.

They offer payment assistance for those who do not have insurance and accept most private insurance carriers. They also accept Medicare and Medicaid for treatment services. As a friend to service members they accept all military and Tricare insurance programs.

It is important to note that like many other facilities of this type, the Joseph S. Massie Unit is a tobacco free organization. They do however provide assistance with smoking cessation products and other methods to recover from nicotine addiction as well.

The Joseph S. Massie Unit accepts persons of all races, religions, affiliations, sexual orientations, and age. They believe in a person centered approach to addiction treatment and plan your treatment to suit your individual needs and goals. They also guarantee strict privacy and confidentiality in their treatment process.

This center accepts referrals from doctors, clinicians, law enforcement, the court system, and other community agencies. They even provide transportation to and from the facility in cases where transportation is an issue.

Addiction treatment does not have to be all seriousness. The Joseph S. Massie Unit offers a wide variety of amenities to both its inpatient and outpatient clients. They have excellent nutrition services and healthy wholesome meals for their inpatient clients. They also offer dietary advice and counseling as part of their body wellness program.

They have a state of the art universal weight training program and system as well as personal trainers to help you develop a routine that works for you and your needs. They offer both indoor and outdoor recreation and plenty of free time to engage in journaling, meditation, and other interests.

There is transportation available for off unit activities so you are not stuck in the facility all of the time. This allows you to get out and be with other members of the community in preparation for your aftercare program.

They also have a mobile treatment services unit for those who are unable or unwilling to access their facility. This mobile unit serves the community members who suffer from disabilities that do not allow them to leave their homes. The mobile unit has all of the services and capabilities of the regular inpatient or outpatient units. This unit offers physical and mental evaluations, medication, medication monitoring, overall health assessments and recommendations, and referrals to other agencies and services within the community.

There is also a recreational activity and leisure training program at this facility. They believe that some therapy can come through leisure activities and recreation.

Calling a drug addiction treatment center was the hardest thing that I’ve ever done. I felt like I was going to have to go through a bunch of problems in order to get help but the people at the Joseph Massie center were really nice. They told me that they have inpatient, outpatient, and family programs that I could take advantage of. They also told me about their education and life skills training, something which I really need. The people that I spoke with there were all really friendly and seemed genuinely interested in me getting the care that I needed. I didn’t feel out of place or embarrassed by anything that they said while I was asking about their programs.
